It's tough to pay the prices when you want things to be free
You want to stay at port, but you're being forced to sea
You're pushed and pulled and tossed until you can't take any more
You wish that things would go back to the way they were before
You pray that times become just like those days for which you yearn
Those days before all those lessons you wish you didn't learn
The pain and loss and misery, the work so drab and dull
The shouts of disappointment echoing throughout your skull
Back then your life was so much simpler than how things are now
You thought that you would not survive- you kept on asking "How?"
But now you wish you could go and tell yourself in the past
They'll just get so much harder, so enjoy them while they last
It's easy to complain, but no doubt you won't get far
For "how things were" will never matter more than how things are
To focus on the past is just to sing a silent song
The road will keep on moving, so you'd better walk along
